Amber Amber derives character from inclusions like air bubbles or fossilized insects or plants unlike diamond and most other gems, where these types of inclusions lower their value. Amber is a comparatively soft material that splinters under a knife and is somewhat soluble in alcohol, and burns with resin-like fumes. However, regardless of its value, it's not a particularly good candidate for insurance against damage.
